Give Me My Mountain!

By Bobbie Jean Merck

“Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said” (Joshua 14:12).

The time has come when almost everyone knows it is time for God to act, and for us to receive the very thing that God has promised.  As Mother Teresa said, “I know in my knower.”

Caleb knew the time had come for the promise of the Lord to be fulfilled for him.  He was of the tribe of Judah, the tribe of praise.  The joy of the Lord is our strength.  Therefore, the fruit of joy is to be a vital reality of our lives.  And it will be if we do the Word as it is written in Psalm 34:1. “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Praise and joy reveal our faith, hope, and trust in the Lord to “give us our mountain.”  And our strength grows stronger and stronger as we praise the Lord.

Pastor Philip Derber has written the words and music to Psalm 35:27.  It is a victory song, and the more you sing it, the more triumphant and joyful you become! Psalm 35:27 says, “Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.”

God has pleasure in our prospering!  That means, God feels a strong positive attraction for our prospering!  He likes our prospering very much!  He wants us to prosper.

Joshua 14:6 tells us the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal.  The Hebrew meaning of Gilgal is “a circle.”  On New Years Eve, 12/31/99, the Lord told us that He was closing 20 year circles.  I thought that would only happen in the year 2000.  But, I continue to see 20 year circles close.  This happens often in churches when I minister.

When a circle closes the good continues and increases.  The bad is left behind in the past.  A new door is open (which we must go through), and a new beginning time begins.  This was about to happen for Caleb.

The important thing is that the Lord had said “the thing.”  If we are getting our mountain we want to be absolutely sure the Lord has said we are to have it.  If so, we will have His ability to do what we are supposed to do with our mountain.  As Jesus came full of grace and power, so God’s mountain-gift will come to us full of grace and power!

Delay is not denial!  His gift will come!  Caleb had waited 45 years for God’s Word to come to pass.  During those long and difficult 45 years God had sustained Caleb.  He never doubted God.  Now was the time for him to receive his inheritance.

Notice that Caleb had returned from spying out Kadesh-barnea to give Moses the word as it was in his heart.  Caleb did not have one seed of doubt in him.  He knew that if the Lord was with him, he could drive the giants (the enemy) out, and possess the land.

Possession is part of our inheritance.  We have a covenant with God; God has a covenant with us.  How can this be?  We have Jesus, and He is in covenant with Almighty God!  We are to “take possessions,” and this requires “fighting the good fight of faith.”  God has given us an inheritance in Christ.  It’s time to inherit the inheritance!

Inherit means to possess, and then to occupy.  It also has the legal sense of becoming an heir.  It also has the military sense of an invasion.  All of this is for the purpose of settling in a territory.  There is covenant between God and you.  Take possession!

It is enlightening to learn that the 10 spies and the other children of Israel brought slander upon the land of promise by their murmuring, grumbling, self-pity and fear.  Numbers 14:36, 37 says, “And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.”  What we say affects our land and the negative does us no good.

The first giant Caleb had to conquer was in his own life.  He had to conquer the grasshopper complex.  That is also true for us!  We must conquer thinking and feeling “we can’t,” or “poor me,” or whatever else causes you to think so little of yourself.  We are in Christ!  And Christ is in us!  God has made us more than conquerors!  No grasshopper complex here!  Caleb overcame the grasshopper complex before he overcame the giants.

Let us realize that difficulties are opportunities disguised.  In every difficulty God has a provision of promise and prosperity.

We are not to look on giants as bigger than we are, but as smaller than God is.  Nothing is too hard for our God and Lord.

Caleb is a pattern for us as we look to God to “give us that mountain” that we know is ours.  Caleb was a strong man all of this life, and now he is 85 years old and wants his mountain.  What made Caleb so strong?  Consider these qualities.

Caleb was a man of strong character.  His strong character developed as he “wholly followed the Lord” (Joshua 14:8).  In other words, he was willing and obedient to do the Lord’s Word and will.  He never considered “Caleb,” only the Lord his God.

Caleb’s character produced confidence.  Confidence is a fruit of godly character.  So much attention is given to a lack of self-confidence. The simple and easy way to conquer that giant is to wholly follow the Lord, developing strong character.

Character produced confidence, and confidence produced courage.  When you have strong, godly character, you have confidence, faith, and boldness.  With these qualities in your life, you have the courage to step out and do the impossible.  Because you know the Lord your God is with you, and with God all things are possible.

Now Caleb knows it is time for the conquest.  He has kept that vision strong in his heart for 45 years. He is strong and he wants his mountain.

Joshua 14:11 says, “As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.”

Typically, strength comes from eating bread.  Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”  If we would be strong, let us daily partake of His Word.  Then we will grow and have strength.

“Now therefore give me this mountain….”  After 45 years, the mountain became Caleb’s. The blessing came.

Joshua 14:13 says, “And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.” The Hebrew meaning of Hebron is “fellowship with God.”  Fellowship with God produces within and for you the fullness of God.  You will then experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit, and God’s ability.

Possess your mountain and be blessed!
