Why Words?
By Bobbie Jean Merck “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty, a formless mass cloaked in darkness. And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface. Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light” (Genesis 1:1-3 NLT). “In the beginning…!” “In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make” (John 1:1-3 NLT). “In the beginning…!” God has never failed and neither has His Word ever failed! Word! Words! They are the way of God. Of all His creation, He has given mankind the capacity of words to be spoken as He Himself would speak. All salvation comes by the Word of God. What are we filling our mouths with? What are we speaking? It is examination time. The only way we can know what we are saying is by listening intently to what we are saying. This is not a momentary or seasonal ritual, but rather it is an occupation of our lifetime at all times. Why do “words” mean so much to me and is a conviction of my heart? The revelation came July 13, 1976. I was not in full time ministry at that time, but I was invited to minister for a three day seminar in a rural middle Georgia town. The area was poverty stricken, hot, dry, and the atmosphere was heavy with defeat, despair, and complacency. My heart was filled with compassion. During the entire time I prayed in the spirit, wept, and listened to God while praying. This I was earnestly doing on that day when suddenly God gave me a vision. I saw a bank vault with its heavy, steel, locked door. God asked, “How do you get inside thus giving all the vault’s contents to your access?” I answered, “You have to know the combination to get inside and then all the contents are yours to access.” He said, “That is right.” I then saw gold, silver, currency, and coins filling every shelf to capacity. We went through the identical conversation again. Know the combination, unlock, open the door, go inside, and take what you want. Then the bank vault was empty, except one copper penny was on the middle shelf in the center of the vault. The same questions and answers were stated again. Then God said, “The combination to receive every miracle and all that you need for a good and godly life is in the words that you speak. That combination does not consist of your speaking the right words when you need something, but speaking the right words at all times. A big and great miracle (to us) requires no more than the tiny. They are the same to Me. Use the combination always for ‘all things’ to be given to you.” It is a matter of choice. We, by our words, choose ‘life and blessings’ or ‘death and cursings’ every micro–second-moment of every day for ourselves and all that concerns us. In 1980 someone called and was genuinely concerned. They said, “She is negating our prayers by her negative words.” Regardless of the sincerity and earnestness of their prayers, they were cancelled by the negativism, murmuring, and strife–evil-filled words that followed. I said (out of my spirit what I had never heard, seen, or read), “We will pray in agreement that God will give her, and she will have, ‘circumcised lips’.” Wow! What a statement! We could do a volume on that statement. In September 1993 God said to me, “If you want beauty for ashes you must not speak about the betrayal.” He then gave me Isaiah 61: 2, 3, 7. “…the time of the LORD's favor has come…. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of despair. For the LORD has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory. Instead of shame and dishonor, you will inherit a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy.” Dear sweet people, refusing to speak negative words, but rather choosing to speak in agreement with God’s Word, is faith, trust, and confidence in God to act and bring the success we know is our inheritance. To speak negative is to say we are trusting in ourselves and the flesh. All is God’s way or chaos (a rude, unformed mass). Speaking of betrayal, wounds, hurts, or others’ negative actions (against us) is feeding on ashes. In 1993 the Lord gave me Isaiah 44:20 and made a strong believer out of me in that revelation. The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes. He is trusting something that can give him no help at all. Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, "Is this thing, this idol that I'm holding in my hand, a lie?” (Isaiah 44:20 NLT). How do we feed on ashes? By talking. You know, that includes email, faxes and all communications. I chose and choose not to be a fool. I see in His Word, life is not good for a fool. These ashes cannot give us any help at all. Feeding on ashes is trusting in a helpless and hopeless god of vanity. A person who insists on feeding on ashes is a deceived person, observing or heeding lying vanities, and in doing so, no mercy can be given them. “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy” (Jonah 2:8 KJV). Yet, in their deception they expect God (and “them”) to make all things right and just. Such an offended, feeding-on-ashes person does not realize they are holding onto a lie that will surely last only a moment. As long as they talk about “it”, they are causing the lie to remain, and they are feeding strength to the devil who then has an open door and invitation to do his dirty, evil work. “Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling” (Proverbs 20:3 NLT). Yes, the enemy may plan a heap of trouble for us. But, if we learn and practice the vocabulary of silence, his plans will fail. “The talk of fools is a rod for their backs, but the words of the wise keep them out of trouble” (Proverbs 14:3 NLT). My son, John, spoke very wise words to me a few years ago, “Silence cannot be quoted.” Selah. I add, neither can the devil use silence that is God–ordained. Then what are we to do? The battle is too great for us to achieve the victory. Do we truly believe that the battle is spirit, spirit against spirit, and that we do not have a battle of war with flesh and blood? If so, let’s act like we believe that. Then and only then is it possible for us not be afraid or discouraged but to know and do, “…the battle is not yours, but God’s. You will not even need to fight. You will stand and see the Lord’s victory on your behalf” (see Second Chronicles 20:15,16 NLT). “Every word of God proves true. He defends all who come to him for protection” (Proverbs 30:5 NLT). Our Lord knew His Father was the One to look to, trust, and be saved! We are to imitate, copy, or be like Him. He never took up an offense or acted in His own defense! He said not a word to protect Himself. Look at Him now! The resurrected Lord and King! Hallelujah! His way is victory! “Our victory is certain. The Captain on whose side we are knows no defeat!” (Second Corinthians 2:14 Conybeare).
